The Literary Pieces Of Ernest Hemingway, A Great American...

Metaphors are figures of speech conveyed to non-literal, non-applicable objects, actions or phrases. They can trick the mind’s interpretation of one thing into something more than what it appears. Metaphors envelop many writers’ literary pieces and can complicate more than what seems obvious to the readers whilst portraying different aspects for literary criticisms. Many authors utilize these poetic tactics to give different perspectives to their written works. Ernest Hemingway, a great American 20th century novelist produced many literature writings, and of his greatest creations Hills like White Elephants emerged in 1920. A short story consisting of what appears to be a simplistic conversation between an American man and a mysterious woman named Jig, (whose ethnicity was never revealed) soon developed into a convoluted scenario between male and female seemingly sharing two very different viewpoints on a singular mysterious topic. The setting for the lover’s conversation takes place in a small bar/cafà © in or near a train station. After the short story’s publication, many writers expressed different interpretations of what Ernest Hemingway’s true meaning of this â€Å"simplistic† topic could have conveyed to its audiences. Many literary criticisms were formatted. The phrase, â€Å"So it goes†, seems to show up constantly to show how Kurt Vonnegut accepts all the tragedies in his life. This phrase tells us that we should accept tragedies in our life and be able to move on because life will always go on. I disagree with what is being said in this sentence about how moments are not significant. Personally, I think moments are very important and they last in your brain for a very very long time. They don’t just disappear like this sentence is saying. For example, going to college is a moment in your life, and that doesn’t just disappear because it is a significant moment in your life. Billy seems to see death as just a moment that will disappear and that there are other moments when people are totally fine. Abstract The simple difference between the Articles of Confederation and US Constitution is that the articles were not strong enough to hold our young nation together. The articles operated the US as separate states. Under the articles, it was very difficult to pass laws since the requirement of 9 out of the 13 states approval was needed for ratification. The Articles created a loose confederation of sovereign states and a weak central government, leaving most of the power with the state governments. The need for a stronger Federal government soon became apparent and eventually led to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The members of the Constitutional Convention signed the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787 in†¦show more content†¦But the articles denied Congress the power to collect taxes, regulate interstate commerce and enforce laws. Because of this, the central government had to request donations from the states to finance its operations and raise armed forces . The states attempted to limit the power of the national government because they feared that it would become a monarchy. In an effort to limit the power of the national government, Congress created one without enough power to govern effectively, which led to serious national and international problems. George Washington called for a convention in late May 1787; in order speak about the nation s political and economical problems and revise the Articles. Delegates from eleven out of the thirteen states attended this convention. They decided on a government consisting of three branches: legislative (Congress), executive (the President), and judicial (Supreme Court). These branches were under the checks-and-balances in order to maintain balance in powers and to prevent tyranny in the country. The Great Compromise solved the issue that arose between the delegates that believed the separation of powers into three different branches would ensure that the United States would not become another monarchy. Women’s Position in Chaos: The Violence in Congo Problem Statement The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has continuously experienced increasingly brutal cases of violence against the female gender (Peterman, Palemo, Bredenkamp, 2011). As Peterman et al. (2011) continue to state, this gender based violence against women in the Congo is mainly characterized by widespread sexual violence, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), gang rape, and the abduction of women for sexual slavery purposes among several others. As a matter of importance, sexual violence against women is reported to be more prevalent within families, the resulting consequence being the continuous destabilization of populations, aside from the destruction of both community and family bonds (Johnson, Scott, Rughita, Kisielewski, Asher, Ong, Lwry, 2010). Recent reports from world bodies such as the United Nations indicate that a majority of the cases of sexual violence reported in the DRC are inexplicably linked to the ongoing armed and civil unrest in the Congo.
